webermichelson - Rename the war

Someone once said that webermichelson oscillate between Kraut and Club, which seems quite appropriate, since this notion focuses on the horizon instead of a certain point (as such it is wide-ranging rather than aiming for a fixed definition). Drums, guitars and arrays of sound effects, analogue samples and electronic knob twiddling; something akin to a DJ set without turntables and laptops. While such a setup brings postrock to mind, but such generic terms can be discarded straight away. At times the sound is spherical with an afterhour feeling, and then again it can be kicking with a hint of postpunk. It is never clean. Rows of plugs and piles of cables inform the sound, and yet the whole of the resulting recordings make for an enjoyable listen. Song structures surface only rarely. Everything is in flux, drifting from one state to another. Eventually it all leads to the dance floor. Similar to the way in which webermichelson approach and reject established structures, Benjamin Kilchhofer aka Timoka develops an electronic rereading through his own rework of their entire album. The artist operates in the field between electronic music and visual art and sees his rework as a certain kind of status quo. »I have abandoned the classic remix concept insofar as webermichelson is hardly discernible anymore, which is why rework seems a more apt title. Through sampling and re-synthesis I made my own virtual ‘webermichelson instruments’ and then arranged the tracks – I treated the drum sounds in a similar way. Through this process, this cut-up approach so to say, fragments of melodies and rhythms would often surface coincidentally. I would never have come up with these without the raw material provided by webermichelson. The rework was created over a longer period of time and it was never my intention to see it as a finished piece.« - says Kilchhofer.
